Beavers, Ref Spoil
By Fred Delkin
Four out of five ain't bad, but a perfect Pac10 Pigskin prediction effort last week was
spoiled when mediocre play by the Oregon State Beavers was topped by a referee's restoration of
one second on the clock, allowing UCLA to kick a game-winning field goal. We called wins by
USC, Oregon, Stanford and Cal correctly.
The nation's best collegiate team faces a jinx this week in Berkley, but Oregon will overcome
Cal to remain on the road to a national title game, and it looks like BCS #2 squad Auburn may
face a fall, not on the field, but from the NCAA, if their QB star Cam Newton creates sanctions
with his recruitment and academic blackmarks. Coming up...
OREGON at CAL the Golden Bears do very well at home, but collapse on enemy turf. Duck
coach Chip Kelly's 'one game at a time' philosophy will carry the day for his deep and talented
pupils. OREGON by 21.
SOUTHERN CAL at ARIZONA this is a tough call. The Wildcats played like a league title
contender before succumbing to Stanford, while only Oregon has soundly whipped a talented
Trojan clan. We think Arizona can prevail on its home field. ARIZONA by 1.
WASHINGTON STATE at OREGON STATE the woebegone Cougars have shown some signs
of life lately, but their hosts should be inspired to answer Bevo critics by whipping the patsies
from the Palouse. OREGON STATE by 17.
STANFORD at ARIZONA STATE the Cardinals only problem to date was their match with
Oregon. Arizona State is particularly adept at defense, but not strong enough to defeat the pro-
type offense coach Jim Harbaugh has installed in Palo Alto, led by wunderkind QB Andrew
Luck. STANFORD by 14.
WASHINGTON and UCLA have the week off. PORTLAND STATE hosts a weak NORTHERN
COLORADO bunch and will earn a victory by 14, with only a trip to Northern Arizona
remaining on the Viking schedule. Wait 'til next year to find out if new PAU coach Nigel
Burton can resurrect his program.
