Pete Scores 8-2 as
College Grid begins
By Fred Delkin
(Sept 09) -- Our crystal ball incurred a pair of cracks on opening week of the 2010 college football season...UCLA did not survive a journey to Kansas State, to which we attribute superior coaching, and Washington failed to live up to our expectations on the Huskies' visit to Brigham Young...undoubtedly a bitter pill for UW head coach Steve Sarkisian to swallow, since he is a BYU alum. Our predictions for Oregon schools' contests rang true, though Oregon State put up a valiant battle in Texas before succumbing to Texas Christian. Oregon's Ducks were extremely rude to visiting New Mexico and Portland State suffered as expected in taking on Division I Arizona State.
This week's expected outcomes:
OREGON at TENNESSEE...the Quackers will face a far more formidable foe, but they have
shown speed, depth and power enough to dampen the spirits of the 100,000+ fans in Neyland
stadium. Duck linemen on both offense & defense are the edge their team will take into every
game this season, earning time for their backfield brethren. OREGON by 14.
SYRACUSE at WASHINGTON...returning home, The Dawgs have the tools to outpoint the
visitors. Jake Locker will entertain his Husky faithful and a green but learning UW defense will shine. WASHINGTON by 20.
STANFORD at UCLA...the visiting Bruins learned nothing from lookin at tapes of Stanford's
total dominance of visiting Sacramento State last Saturday. Coach Harbaugh's Cardinals,
however, will profit from witnessing 's UCLA's weaknesses at K-State. STANFORD by 14.
VIRGINIA at USC...the host Trojans were not impressive while whipping Hawaii last week, but Virginia hasn't the talent to scare the men of Troy. SOUTHERN CAL by 28.
NORTHERN ARIZONA at ARIZONA STATE...Dennis Erickson's Sun Devils should be
ashamed, facing back-to-back lower division foes. Just another workout before the Devils
finally get challenged on a trip to Wisconsin. ARIZONA STATE by 35.
COLORADO at CALIFORNIA...the Golden Bears easily rolled over lower classification Cal
Davis, and will have their way with the visiting Buffalos. CAL by 21.
THE CITADEL at ARIZONA...this mismatch shouldn't be allowed. The Pac10 title-contending Wildcats wil be challenged to hold their score down. ARIZONA by 42.
MONTANA STATE at WASHINGTON STATE...the visitng Bobcats whomped a lower class
Adams State in their opener, possibly foretelling yet another embarassment for the host Cougars. However, even WSU should overcome this challenge and post maybe their lone victory for 2010. WASHINGTON STATE by 10.
PORTLAND STATE at CAL DAVIS...this will be a delightful contrast to the opening Viking
journey to Pac10 land. We think PSU has enough talent to make this a tossup. CAL
DAVIS by 1.
