(This is an old-fashioned "monthly" magazine.  Updates do appear, but are not frequent.)

The purpose of the U.S. Constitution is to protect the people from the government.  The purpose of all the various collective "isms: is to protect the government from the people. --Larry Leonard (although it's so obvious that somebody must have said it before I did.)

Colorado voters reject raising taxes to
support education...
(11/2 from Drudge -- The key to this item, featured by Rush, today, is simple.  For decades,  liberals have threatened loss of
fire, police, emergency aid and education funding unless they got the taxes they
wanted.  Never, do  their media outlets mention the spandex bike paths or statues
of famous socialists whose construction will not be abated or discontinued. That
part (gay day parades, free rent for welfare dynasties in the ghetto, free abortions,
etc., etc.) is never  threatened.  Just "essential services" are threatened by the evil
rich (anybody who isn't on food stamps) who refuse to pay ever  higher taxes.

Pay particular attention to the last portion of this x-link text.  Oregon and Washington are specifically mentioned, here.

Death of a Hero:  Smokin' Joe Frazier dies at 67...
Ray Bradbury, in an interview for this magazine, told me that he had reached the age where he couldn't read a newspaper.  It wasn't because his eyes had weakened, but because every time he made that mistake he was
informed that another old pal of his had died.  An old pal of some old guys
he never met just shuffled off
Shakespeare's mortal coil, so this announcement is a requiem for that heavyweight.  I'll move this item
into the literary section for next month, and leave it there for a long time.  Like all of us, he probably had his bad
habits and bad days,
but if you could program your wife's new foetus with grace under pressure, the poetry of
pure athletic movement and the concentration of a Himalayan mystic, the resulting living
myth would be called
Mr. Frazier.  It's like Ronald Reagan.  During a life, you run across people who lift you up
and make you cheer.
I get mad at God when I lose one of them.  A Greek Orthodox priest who used to come out to my place to flyfish
for trout chastised me for saying something like that, but It's a good argument for believing, because you have somebody to complain to.  Bradbury was right.  I should
not be looking at the news at my age.   (This story link
came from the Drudge Report -- LL)

A slow political rape ...
October 29, 2011: Liberal Democrat Media Sluts and Pundit Pimps on Parade:
In the opinion of Oregon Magazine, this is the bottom.  This is as low as they can go. The citizens of this state who support the MSM are either IQ-deficient or Traitors.  Any member of the Oregon Media who does not do a front page, top of the show
denouncement of this smear is made of the material that coats the surface of summer ponds.   To the staff at the shrinking
Oregonian, and the staff of Oregon Public Broadcasting, we say: "Wouldn't you be more comfortable in Uganda or Cuba?"

Note: 11/7:  Attorney Gloria Alred (sp?) of California was the one who introduced the nation to the famous illegal maid a while back  Today she brought a woman to a press conference.  This woman claims Cain made unwanted advances during dinner at a restaurant.  As with all the recent such charges, she offers no substantiation of her claims.  Cain denies the incident.  What interests us about this has to do with similar charges against Clarence Thomas and Bill Clinton.  In the former instance, the MSM blared the alleged event to the high heavans.  In the latter instance, the MSM rose to defend Clinton.  We think this makes their reaction to today's events predictable. One conservative has already said that he is expecting more of this kind of thing to pop up, one at a time, until Cain has been reduced to an also ran in the upcoming caucuses and primaries.
Editorial insertion 11/5:  Regarding the Democrat mob's attempt to lynch Mr. Cain, as in the days of the Civil War, and the Jim Crow Democrat Era which followed, it is once more Republicans who will defend the man from his former slave-masters.  You say, "Well, some of these Democrats are genuine, card-carrying African-Americans.  Is it your claim that they're racists?"  My response is no.  I'm claiming they like having slaves, and Cain somehow has cut his chains and left the Democrat plantation.  Massas hate to lose their slaves.  Here's some information that should shiver some Oregon liberal timbers:   Ken's "Congress"    And, if you've got a little more time, let's bring racism right to this state:
Oregon's Racist History   For those with only an instant to give to the truth, put this in your bong
and smoke it:  just like Jesse Jackson, the first slave-holding "massa" in the Colony of Massachusetts
was black.

Who's Cooking the Multnomah (library) Books?

Do the people of the state's largest city want their county libraries to become tax districts?  Are you
certain that you want the government to control the libraries, as is the case in North Korea, Uganda
and Iran?  This Cascade Policy release is a brief read.  A little text about a big thing.  For some historical
perspective, I'll point out that it was the super rich who by way of personal charity began the mass
distribution of opportunity to know in America.  Ray Bradbury was a product of the largess of an evil
corporate robber-baron. (LL)

Atlas Shrugged Movie is Raising Cain

Who is John Galt?

March 22. 2011 --  Ayn Rand’s epic novel, Atlas Shrugged, is finally coming to the silver screen. Whether you’ve read the book or not, you won’t want to miss Part 1 of the film, which debuts around the country the weekend of April 15-16-17th.  So far, the nearest confirmed theaters are in the Seattle area. You can help bring it to Portland, or a theater in your city, by “Demanding” it at the link below. The book was published in 1957, but the producers of the film have wisely set it in 2016. This way, Americans can see what’s coming if we don’t turn around the collectivist government in Washington.

It’s a great story, and a powerful warning. Don’t miss it.

OMED: Many early pieces in Oregon Magazine were written in a version of Netscape
Composer that in modern browsers produces black diamonds with reversed question
marks inside them.  These are almost always quotation marks, apostrophes or dashes.
When you see text that contains those black diamonds, it means I haven't gotten around
to repairing the problem, yet.

Lastly, all of our early work URL suffixes were "htm."  When the computer gods decided
to change those to "html," problems arose,  but changing the suffix from one to the other
may make the page you want available
